How can we find you on Facebook?
Check out our Facebook Page here: https://www.facebook.com/UnderworldFL/
And join our Facebook Group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/UnderworldFL/
Do you have a Discord server?
We certainly do, and you can find it here: Discord
How do I create a character?
Firstly, you will want to download the Core Rulebook, which can be found here:
https://underworldlarp.com/rulebooks
The basic facts you will need to answer to make a character are the following:
- You will need a username and password for the logs system. The google docs form is in plain text and not secure, so do NOT use a password here that you use anywhere else.
- Character’s name
- Character’s TRUE name. The details for what this is can be found in the core rulebook, page 11.
- Character’s race, which is found in the core rulebook as well.
- Character’s Class, which is also found in the core rulebook.
After answering the 5 questions, you will need to complete a Google Docs form provided by a LARP staff member. Once that’s done, our head of logistics will enter your information. After that, you can use the CP (experience points) available for your character! If you want to level up, you will need to buy a “character unlock.” If you’d like to do this now to purchase and apply blankets before your first game, click the link below.
If you encounter any issues or wish to know more about character creation, feel free to reach out on our Facebook Group
or through Discord. Our community is always happy to help new players find their feet and we also have a New Player Liason who is always happy to help.
After a character is submitted and processed by local staff, you can buy the character unlock here:
What are XP Blankets?
Every event you attend, you will receive one XP Blanket. Players may spend 2 Blankets per month, which may be applied to any of their unlocked characters as they wish.
What are Soul Frags?
Soul Frags are awarded to those individuals who seek to improve the game by donating to Underworld. While we accept money, we really appreciate time, effort, and props to help make the local game better. Coincidentally, every time you do a NPC/monster shift, you will earn Frags.
The Book of Soul Fragments is a set of rules and policies that act as a supplement to the Core Rulebook for Underworld LARP. It contains special classes, races and abilities that can be purchased with soul “frags”. This book can be found at: Underworld LARP: Run – Fight – Hide
How can I earn Frags without spending money?
Keep an eye out on our Facebook group and Discord, as we will announce any opportunities on earning Frags. On our discord page our donation list can be found under “Important Stuff” -> # donations.
When can I start buying XP Blankets?
The moment you have an approved and unlocked character in the Database you can start buying XP Blankets and applying them to that character. All money from XP Blankets go toward Underworld Global’s continued efforts, and help pay for the database.
You may buy them here: https://underworldlarp.com/shop/
When can I start buying Frags?
You may begin buying Frags immediately, through this link:
All money from Frags goes to the local Guild and helps to pay for new props and other resources for the local Guild.
Where can I find costume supplies and resources?
We have created an Amazon list with a number of useful products to help you along and to spur your creativity: http://a.co/2CGNszc
Can my character be the Captain of a ship?
They certainly can!
However, it should be noted that there will not be any in-game mechanics for having the backstory of being a captain. Thus, you cannot use your ship to fire cannonballs at characters you dislike, and you cannot call in NPCs to do your bidding.
There are a number of NPC factions detailed in the setting material. Can player characters create their own factions?
Yes! We encourage players to create their own Tribes, Clans, Houses, etc. If you would like to submit your faction to the local Guild for feedback through email you may, it is encouraged to do so but not required. If you are interested in joining an existing player-run faction, feel free to email us or include it on your feedback which is a form posted following every game.
Boffer Larp or Parlor Larp?
Boffer Larp!
What’s the gist of the game aside from being a Dark Fantasy/Pirate LARP?
Underworld LARP is a global organization of LARPs, mostly in Canada. Florida is going to be one of the first US games, with more opening up over time.
Since we’re so far from the closest Canadian chapter, we decided to go with being out on the edge of civilization. Since Florida also has a bunch of pirate history, local festivals, and such, we decided to base the local game on being pirates.
Also, because we love spooky stuff and Underworld is a dark fantasy game, we also have a bunch of ghost stories and cryptids.
While we have many mods that focus on living in a town that’s mostly lawless, we’ll also explore tales of tragedy that result in spirits that can’t quite move on after death. Additionally, there will always be horrible things lurking in the woods, and some of them will slink into town once the sun has set…
What amenities can be found at the site?
The site has cabins with beds and AC with the option to tent as well. There is a shared gender-neutral bathhouse with toilets and showers towards the middle of the camp, 4 single-user bathrooms and showers on the most eastern side of the camp, and there are 4 cabins on the west side of the camp with a bathroom including showers inside the cabins. Cabin beds are first come first serve, though some groups have “claimed” cabins, so its always polite to ask if someone is already there. If you are having issues finding a sleeping spot, feel free to wander on over to OPS and a staff member will be more than happy to help you out.
The site also has an industrial kitchen, including a fridge, microwave, and ice. You are welcome to use the stove and other appliances along with any kitchenware such as plates, cups, silverware, pots, pans, etc. Do be aware, that this is an active YMCA camp that hosts other events, there is no guarantee that food found in the fridge belongs to us or another player. So please do not take or consume food found in the kitchen unless it belongs to you, or is offered by other players or staff members.
At this time, we do not have a meal plan. Staff encourages players to bring enough food and water for themselves – though a flask or water skin you fill up at the “Tavern” kitchen is also an appropriate option for water. Please stay hydrated 🙂
Can characters be created now so they can build up XP on characters through blankets prior to the first event?
Yes, absolutely. If you are certain with the concept that you want, feel free to fill out this form.
https://forms.gle/WAGsxHGpYD5GKHSL8
Remember that you must unlock your character on the database prior to being able to apply blankets to said character and that you can only edit your character (whether adding blankets, skills, etc.) once per calendar month and there are no exceptions.
Will there be more ways to consistently get Soul Frags, or will you be locked out of things within the Frag book until you NPC a few events?
There will be many opportunities to earn frags throughout the next few months. A couple of examples for earning frags beyond buying them are as follows: donating stuff to help garb out NPC and participation in certain pre-launch events. Also, an important note, if you have ideas for something you’d like to do to help Underworld Florida get up and running in exchange for Frags, then feel free to email us at Guild@UWDarkHarbor.com.
Any time there is an opportunity to earn frags, it will be very publicly announced.
Is permanent death very common? Is it uncommon enough to be worth it to drop lots of money on garb/kit?
This is a more difficult question, and it depends entirely on your playstyle. If you’re spending a lot of time in the center of town and not diving directly into every fight, or opting out of night-time raids using our Blue Lantern Policy, you will more than likely last a very long time.
Our goal is for players to have fun while experiencing the dark horror genre that is Underworld LARP, so things are going to be scary at times, and there are going to be some things that you have to run from, or hide from, rather than fighting. The goal is not necessarily to kill characters but to make sure the player is having fun within the genre while telling a collaborative story.
The first two deaths of a character (depending on race, this may be only one) are free, meaning the character will not permanently die, after this it is a coin flip whether a character permanently dies or not.
There are some characters in other Guilds that have been around for many years and opting for retirement seems like something that is not uncommon.
What is the Blue Lantern Policy?
The Blue Lantern Policy is a Local Policy. It is something that allows you to easily opt-in and out of cabin raids. If your cabin agrees to put up a Blue Lantern directly outside your building, your cabin will not be raided by NPCs during the late-night time (exact times are TBD). However, to be clear, this Blue Lantern Policy will not prevent PvP actions to happen in that cabin during the night time.
Although this is a boffer LARP, are there options for gameplay that are more or equally roleplay focused? Is this still a good game for those that are more into LARP for the roleplay focus?
The majority of the mechanics of Underworld are combat-focused, however, at Underworld Florida we will ensure that there are plenty of opportunities and NPCs sent into the world for those that are solely into roleplay. We are planning Dark Harbor to be a 50% combat and 50% roleplay game in order for it to be a good fit for a wider audience of LARPers and allow them to experience and shape the story of Dark Harbor, regardless of playstyle.
How much does it cost to attend an event?
Event tickets are $60 to play as a registered Player Character. Tickets can be found in the store ~two weeks prior to an event, and be sure to pre-register at logistics.underworldlarp.com.
The ticket grants you access to the site including the amenities listed under “What amenities can be found at the site?”
You are asked to provide your own food, water, sheets, blanket, and pillow as those items are not provided by the event or site.
Tickets are event tickets, we have no partial event tickets available. If you still want to come to the game but do not feel you are going to be able to spend much time in character for the price of the ticket, then NPCing is always an option. Feel free to contact us on our social media, because sometimes Shapers enjoy using the extra NPCs for fun projects or characters.
What is full time NPCing?
Anyone is welcome to come and be an NPCs for any amount of time at 3 frags per hour. Wheather that is some extra time outside of your standard NPC shift, or you do not have the time to attend the game on a game weekend but still wish to come by for a few hours to NPC.
Full-Time NPCs are specifically those who come to the game to dedicate the game weekend to being an NPC. If this describes you or what you want to do this is the breakdown:
There is no need to buy an event ticket.
Please register on logistics.underworldlarp.com as an NPC. (If you register as your character our Head of Logistics will think you owe us money)
You must dedicate 16 hours inside the time frame of Friday at 9:30pm – Sunday 1:00pm on game weekend. You are welcome to spend more time NPCing if you wish. You are in charge of when you are NPCing and when you are not. We do ask that you take care of yourself. Please be sure to eat, sleep, and attend to hygiene needs. If you are having trouble managing your time feel free to speak with a staff member.
Please log your hours at the Operations building on the sign-in sheet on the whiteboard.
In return, you will be given 100 frags and 1 blanket.
Med Cabin PvP rules.
- This is a Safe Space for those who can not be woken during sleep, need to administer medications (including injectables), or need to calm down for medical reasons. Do not disturb other players who need to be allowed this time and space.
- ANY PVP/THEFT AIMED AT THE MED CABIN REQUIRES A MARSHAL.
- THIS ONLY APPLIES TO PVP, NPC COMBAT OR RAIDS WILL NEVER HAPPEN IN THE MED CABIN.
- Any med cabin resident who initiates any form of PVP may not enter the cabin for 2 hours after the PVP event. This is in line with the general rule of not going out of game for 2 hours after initiation of PVP, including NPC shift.
- Tagged items not on a character’s person during sleep (exception of primary/secondary weapon) must be left in a designated box on the porch accessible from the front or back steps. Locks or other barriers may be repped there. The game can provide these boxes, or players may make their own weatherproof boxes to use/share. Extra locks on the personal box should be physically repped on or in the container inside the designated box, with the lock tag taped to the outside of the individual item box.
- For purposes of PVP, the top step of the front and back porch is to be treated as the door. Any locks or traps that would be on the door will be repped on the item box.
- In the event of PVP, the PVP marshal only shall knock quietly on the door, then may enter, stating quietly who they are and what is going on.
- Physical PVP must be taken outside, off the porch, as would be for tent camping.
- If any outcome occurs while the player is sleeping (theft, injury, death, turned into a goose, etc) a note will be left posted on the inside of the door with the characters name, stating to go to Ops ASAP, or with other instructions. All residents should share the responsibility to ensure anyone indicated on a Marshal note is notified.
- Fate of the party still applies. Notify the marshal present or shaper at ops before combat begins. AKA, put your hand on your head as you walk outside.
- Marshal shall determine based on the actual scenario inside the cabin and dice roll whether the players’ characters would be woken when none are awake, and leave a note inside the door to go to ops ASAP.
- Notate what is on your Character when going to bed (clothing, weapons, armor, magic, etc.). Post this inventory inside the med-cabin-pvp-log Discord chat before game on, or whenever that inventory changes. This must represent how you actually sleep in the real world. Exceptions due to medical necessity, giving physical obstruction (CPAP, cast, mouth guard, etc.) can be ignored, but must remain within reason. You’re not going to bed with your favorite Suaron prop helmet on.
Pink band rules
Underworld Dark Harbor Safety Team Medical Marshall ~ Combat Safety Instructor ~ Guild Master
Pink Band Safety Policy The purpose of the Dark Harbor Pink Band Policy is to help other players, NPCs, and Marshals identify those who should not engage in boffer combat. While accidents can still happen, this policy is designed to minimize risks. If you are not able to withstand an accidental boffer hit, please consider if this is a safe environment for you. And remember, armor looks cool and also protects you! consider using armor over sensitive areas.
Choosing to use a pink band is at the discretion of the player. There is no formal process for requesting a pink band. Players can procure their own LED lighted pink bands and wear them at their discretion, or they can request a pink band from the Safety Team. Medical Marshals or other staff may offer pink bands after a medical incident where appropriate. A member of the Safety Team may require a player to wear a pink band or leave the game at their discretion.
- Opting In and Out: A player who has opted to wear a pink band may opt to remove their pink bands and engage in combat for the remainder of the game. This cannot be done in the middle of a combat engagement. If a player opts out of combat, they will remain out of combat until the encounter is over.
- PVP Encounters: Pink banding is not an automatic opt-out for PVP. Players should see a PVP Marshal prior to a PVP encounter.
- Combat Engagement: Pink banded players may use packets or contact/touch abilities during engagements but accept the potential to be hit by packets or touch abilities from NPCs. Pink banded players reserve the right to call a medical hold to move themselves or combat a safe distance away and opt out of combat.
- Non-Combat Activities: Pink banded players are not restricted from participating in merchant or non-combat focused mods. If combat escalates, the player should call a medical hold, remove themselves from combat, and trigger “Fate of the Party.”,
- Visibility: Hiding or obscuring pink bands for ANY reason is strictly prohibited.
Pink banded combat rules.
Rules for allowing pink banded combatants into a fight do exist. However, please be responsible in your own capabilities in doing so and never forget that you are increasing the already ever-present risk of accidentally getting hit. These rules are used by all pink banded combatants, and any combatants fighting someone with a pink band. It never hurts to clarify with a new combatant that you are pink banded.
- Melee combat is done at a 10 foot distance, person to person, by pointing your boffer at the opponent, and calling damage and skills once every 3 seconds. This simulates dodging and fighting without having to do so.
- ranged combat is done at a 15-20 foot distance by pointing a drawn LARP-safe arrow or charged LARP safe crossbow with LARP-safe bolt at the opponent and calling damage every 10 seconds.
- There is no change to packet delivered skills, abilities, or spells.
Consequences for Breaking Pink Band Policy Banded Player
- First offense: Verbal warning from the Safety Team.,
- Second offense: Non-combat for the rest of the game.,
- Third offense: Eviction for the remainder of the game.,
- Fourth offense: Suspension/banishment at the Safety Team’s discretion.,
Non-Banded Player/NPC
- First offense: Conversation with the Combat Safety Instructor.,
- Second offense: Remedial training with the Combat Safety Instructor.,
- Third offense: Loss of combat privileges until deemed safe by the Combat Safety Instructor.,
- Fourth offense: Suspension/banishment at the Safety Team’s discretion.,
The Safety Team reserves the right to escalate consequences on a per-case basis.
Reporting Violations If there is a violation of this policy, report it to the marshal on the mod. If none is present, report it to a shaper, medical marshal, or HoX, whoever is most available.
Communication and Awareness The set of medical combat rules, including this policy, will be briefed at new player briefings. It is expected that all players are made aware of these rules.
